Sing Language is a naturally language which develops as a result of the need to communicate among members of Deaf communities . Sing Language is a language tht occurs in the visual – gestural modality . This means it is product using the hands , face , head and is processed by the eyes . In contrast , spoken lanuages are produced using the mouth , tongue and vocal cords and are processed by the ears ..
Different Sign Languages have developed in different countries where Deaf communities exist , for instance British language (BSL) , American Sign Language (ASL) , Ethiopian Sign Language (ESL) , South African Sign Kanguage (SASL) , atc . Sign Language is not universal or international as many people incorrently believe . Sign Languages are living languages made by real people – the Deaf – making them dynamic , constantly changing and developing , like any natural human language which is capable of developing new vocabulary when needed .
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND :
Deafness and Deaf people are as old as humanity itself but the earliest recorded history of the communication and education of Deaf people was un the 16 th century . Deaf children of very rich parents in spain were placed under the care of a monk to taught how to speak . Speech was required in order to acquire wealth .
This was the beginning of the oral insteadof Sign Language controversy which expanded for conturies .
The oral method involves teachimg or communicating with Deaf people through the medium of spoken language (speech) . This method was highly developed in Germany and became know as the " German Method " .
The use of Sign Language was highly developed and used in schools for the Deaf in France , hence the name " France Method " .
In 1880 there was an attempt to eradicate Sign Language from the face of the earth . A conference in Milan (Italy) which was attended by hearing teachers and educationalists but which excluded Deaf people , passed a resolution which banned the use of Sign Langusge in schools of the Deaf .
Sign Language became an underground language . Deaf children used Sign Languafe outside the classroom situation and so it remained a living and natural language .
In 1960 a scientific research report on American Sign Language (ASL) showed that Sign Language was a netural human language with its own grammar , independent of any soken language . Sign Languages could be analysed at amy of the same levels used for spoken languages in terms of phonology , morphologt , syntax , semantics , pragmaticd and discourse analysis .
In the 1970's Simultaneous Communication (simcom) or Total Communication ( TC ) was developed . This is a system adapted by the oralists in an attempt to represent English visually . Simcom / TC involves language has its own grammar as does Sign Language . When you use both languages at same time , . you violate the grammar of both language .
The 1980's saw the advent of the bilingual - bicultural approach . According to this approach Deaf people use Sign Language and written / read / spoken language e.g . English , Zulu , Afrikaans , etc . It acknowledges that Deaf people live in two culture , the one being the majority ( hearing ) and the other being their own culture namely Deaf Culture .
